Strategies for monitoring tropical deforestation using satellite data

چکیده

Measuring the aerial extent of tropical deforestation for other than localized areas requires the use of satellite data.We present evidence to show that an accurate determination of tropical deforestation is very di cult to achieve by a ‘random sampling’ analysis of Landsat or similar high spatial resolution data unless a very high percentage of the area to be studied is sampled. In order to achieve a Landsat-derived deforestation estimate within Ô 20% of the actual deforestation amount 90% of the time, 37 of 40 scenes, 55 of 61 scenes and 37 of 45 scenes were required for Bolivia, Colombia and Peru respectively.

Advancing reference emission levels in subnational and national REDD+ initiatives: a CLASlite approach

Conservation and monitoring of tropical forests requires accurate information on their extent and change dynamics. Cloud cover, sensor errors and technical barriers associated with satellite remote sensing data continue to prevent many national and sub-national REDD+ initiatives from developing their reference deforestation and forest degradation emission levels. Here we present a framework for...

Dimension Reduction of Multi-Spectral Satellite Image Time Series to Improve Deforestation Monitoring

In recent years, sequential tests for detecting structural changes in time series have been adapted for deforestation monitoring using satellite data. The input time series of such sequential tests is typically a vegetation index (e.g., NDVI), which uses two or three bands and ignores all other bands. Being limited to a vegetation index will not benefit from the richer spectral information prov...

Monitoring Deforestation at Sub-Annual Scales as Extreme Events in Landsat Data Cubes

Current methods for monitoring deforestation from satellite data at sub-annual scales require pixel time series to have many historical observations in the reference period to model normal forest dynamics before detecting deforestation. However, in some areas, pixel time series often do not have many historical observations. Detecting deforestation at a pixel with scarce historical observations...

Tropical deforestation and habitat fragmentation in the Amazon: satellite data from 1978 to 1988.

Landsat satellite imagery covering the entire forested portion of the Brazilian Amazon Basin was used to measure, for 1978 and 1988, deforestation, fragmented forest, defined as areas less than 100 square kilometers surrounded by deforestation, and edge effects of 1 kilometer into forest from adjacent areas of deforestation. Tropical deforestation increased from 78,000 square kilometers in 1978...

Temporal dynamics and spatial scales: Modeling deforestation in the southern Yucatán peninsular region

Two spatially explicit econometric land use change models are presented, focusing on tropical deforestation caused by agricultural expansion in the southern Yucatán peninsula, Mexico. The two models developed are both based on conceptually similar theoretical models of farmer behavior. However, there are different empirical specifications of this theoretical model according to the scale of the ...
